I’m only going review the first three, since I won’t get home until nearly midnight and I’ll be collapsing as soon as I walk in the door. I had a terrible night’s sleep last night, so my bed will be calling me.
First up, Mr. Tree. It’s the sort of small, quirky, slice of life movie you only see at festivals. Set in China, amidst growing urbanization and industrialization of the countryside, the village oddball becomes even odder. That’s about it. If it had been later in the day I would have fallen asleep.
Next, after a big coffee, was Werner Herzog’s Into the Abyss. Fabulous, gripping look at the death penalty. How a German filmmaker got these Texans to open up to him amazes me. Try to see this.
Third came Goon, a really good Canadian hockey comedy by the director of Fubar and written by Jay Baruchel. The audience loved it more than I did, but then, I’m not really a hockey fan. Also, one third of the people there were connected with the movie, so most people were a little biased. Still, it’s quite good, and infinitely better than last year’s Hockey: A Musical.
Tomorrow I’ll review tonight’s Edwin Boyd, as well as the three other’s I’m seeing. I need sleep, and it’s only the first Saturday.
