We certainly have. Our oldest invoice from the architect is dated January 26, 2011. That’s a long time ago, and we still haven’t started anything. Mostly what we’ve done is some planning, and lots and lots of waiting. And some packing:
That last shot is of our (unpacked) kitchen, which will get the most dramatic make-over.
We received two contractor bids, and went into a severe state of sticker-shock. One was 100% over what we hoped to spend, the other only 60% over! So we’re meeting with the low bidder, hoping to come up with enough of the right cuts to make this reno affordable, but still worthwhile. For sure we’re cutting out the enclosed front porch (not everyone in the family was onside with that anyway). We’ll also do little or nothing with the upstairs bathroom, apart from a new toilet and a fresh coat of paint. Some further cuts in the basement? We’ll see. What I really don’t want to compromise on is the main floor (and Maria’s promised boxed out window). Although we don’t plan on selling before we die, I want us to enjoy high-quality finishes that will last, and add to the resale value eventually.
Of course, we still have to wait for the building permits.
